Talking Sticks

Description: Groups are assigned to discuss a topic, idea or problem. Begin by having each group member place a pen or pencil in the center of the table. To speak an individual picks up his/her pen or pencil and talks. When done speaking he/she continues to hold the writing implement. That individual must wait to speak again until all other group members have spoken and all pens/pencils on the table have been picked up.

Rationale: Helps ensure that all students participate. Sends the message that everyone’s ideas are valued. Allows quiet students to voice their thoughts in a non-threatening setting. Ensures that more confident students don’t dominate a group. Allows better results to emerge because all group members’ thinking is included. Students have more buy-in to the results.
