Description: A method for grouping students quickly into fours in a classroom with desks. Desks are marked with parts of a circle and on signal must be moved together so that the parts match up to form a whole circle. When done correctly four students are facing each other and this grouping is their pod (see attached diagram and explanation). Can be used as a way to group students to “Think/pair/share”, brainstorm ideas, discuss a concept, or do an activity.
Rationale: This is a very structured way to “group up” that minimizes problems that can arise when students are asked to find a partner or partners with whom to share or collaborate. It is particularly helpful with classes that have difficulty making smooth transitions and need more structure. Groups are teacher-assigned and students practice moving into and out of groups easily.
Preparing the desks: Before “podding up” for the first time, place 4 wedges on desks so that the students can make a complete circle when they pod up correctly. Number and color each pod group in your class differently so that everyone know exact who is on their group. See animation for placement/orientation of wedges on each student’s desk.
