Description: Students work in small groups to categorize a set of cards with pictures or words on them according to specified criteria. As they sort the cards they discuss their reasons for placing each card in a designated group. Teacher circulates and notes student thinking and what ideas may be problematic. When complete, provides the basis for whole group discussion.
Rationale: Allows students to access prior knowledge and brings to the surface uncertainties in their thinking. As they work together they justify their own ideas and perhaps are convinced to modify them.
